Barrier-free entrance for elementary school

Posted on 11th Mar 2022

We, the community of the Berlin Bilingual School Berlin, see the call of inclusive education as an important asset.
This already starts at the main entrance, which with its large staircase access at Weinstr. 1 is currently not barrier-free and urgently needs to be rebuilt. A ramp will ensure accessibility and provide equal access for all children and adults.
Our community consists of 290 children between the ages of 6 and 12, as well as their parents. We also care for children with motor impairments or who are dependent on a wheelchair.
We would like to open our house to all children, but we are already reaching our limits in terms of accessibility in the entrance area. Celebrations at BBS are usually celebrated with the entire community. We want to ensure that in the future grandparents and families with strollers can also come to our school without restrictions. Our aspiration is to provide unrestricted access to everyone.
Furthermore, other associations (e.g. the Berlin Kids International Verein) and the Pfefferwerk Stadtkultur gGmbH also use the premises of our school for events. The barrier-free access also allows all cooperation partners to use the main entrance without restrictions.
The reconstruction of the main entrance, including a ramp, is scheduled for 2022. The completion of this is targeted for July 2022.
